A masked gunman fired shots in Riverhead Wednesday night, police said, and a young man was targeted.

According to Riverhead Town police, at 11:15 p.m., a man, 19, of Bellport, was spotted driving erratically on East Main Street.

Upon being stopped, police saw that a side window was broken on his vehicle. The man said he had been shot at in the rear parking lot of the Hyatt Hotel; he had been staying at the hotel, the man said, and when he got into his car, two masked gunmen approached him and ordered him out of the car.

The man did not comply; he said one of the masked individuals then shot through the window into the vehicle. The man fled in his car. Several witnesses reported seeing the incident, police said, and said the masked individual also fired shots at the hotel before fleeing with two others in a car.

The man did not suffer any injuries and said he didn't want to pursue the matter further.

Police believe the young man was targeted and the incident was not a random act.

The investigation is ongoing; anyone with information is asked to call Riverhead Town police at 631-727-4500.
