Police: Reports of Gunman Near Suffolk Community College 'Unfounded'

The campus was on lockdown Friday morning, police say.

Although the eastern campus of Suffolk County Community College was on lockdown Friday morning after an individual called to report the possible sighting of a gunman nearby, police say after a thorough investigation, the report was unfounded.

Sgt. Andrew Ficurilli of the Southampton Town Police said there was a call on Friday morning reporting one person "in the vicinity" of the college on Suffolk County Route 51 that "might have had a gun."

The caller, Ficurilli said, did not provide specific information and gave no description.

With the help of New York State Police, Southampton Town Police checked the entire area. "We found absolutely nothing," he said.

Police called the college as a courtesy, he said, but did not issue the lockdown and only learned the lockdown had occurred after the police department began getting calls.
