A single car accident closed a section of Route 25 in Aquebogue for 14 hours, Riverhead Town Police said Sunday -- sparking traffic snarls on one of the most heavily trafficked weekends of the year in Riverhead.
According to Officer Breitenbach, a single car accident occured on Saturday night when a car heading eastbound ran off the road and took down a LIPA pole.
"It took forever" for LIPA repairs to be completed, Breitenbach said, adding that a section of Route 25 in Aquebogue was shut down from Church Lane to Tuthills Lane for 14 hours.
The section of roadway was finally reopened by 6 p.m. on Sunday evening.
The accident led to a traffic detour and delays, Breitenbach said. "Traffic was backed up at some point -- and this was actually the heaviest weekend for people coming out. It didn't help," he said.
No arrests were made and no serious injuries were reported, Breitenbach said.
