Police Warn Residents Not To Fall For Phone Scammer

Suspect allegedly demands payment for delinquent water bills.

Riverhead Town police are investigating two incidents where an alleged unknown male scammer has called residents and asked for payment of a delinquent water bill. Payment must be made immediately over the phone with a credit card, the caller states.

The calls are fraudulent, police say, and not authorized by the Town of Riverhead; the town does not accept payment over the phone for water bills.

Police warn residents to take all necessary precautions when releasing personal information. According to authorities, the calls are taking place all across Long Island. Anyone who believes they have received such a call should contact Riverhead Town Police at 631-727-4500 and press "O" to speak to the police dispatcher.
