Riverhead Brother of Hit-And-Run Suspect Found Guilty of Lying to Cops

Miguel Ixpec-Chitay was convicted of making a materially false statement to federal investigators, reports say.

The brother of a man believed to be responsible for the July hit-and-run that killed a Syosset nun was convicted Wednesday of lying to federal agents about the crime.

According to 27East, Miguel Ixpec-Chitay, of Horton Avenue in Riverhead, was convicted of making a materially false statement to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents about communicating with his wanted brother, Carlos.

Investigators discovered over 15 calls were reportedly made between the brothers the night of the hit-and-run, though Miguel Ixpec-Chitay told agents he did not speak to his brother in the weeks following the crime, said 27East.

Police believe Ixpec-Chitay's brother, Carlos, is responsible for the death of 59-year-old Sister Jackie Walsh who was fatally struck by a car as she took an evening walk in Water Mill. Walsh, a pastoral associate at St. Edward the Confessor, was on a retreat in July with her fellow Sisters of Mercy at the time of the tragedy.

Miguel Ixpec-Chitay – who was arrested in September by Immigrations Customs Enforcement officials and tried in a federal court in Central Islip – will be sentenced Jan. 8.

According to 27East, authorities belive Carlos Ixpec-Chitay has fled the country, despite a nationwide manhunt that ensued in the days following the incident.
