UPDATE: SUV Slams into Sag Harbor Post Office

Police say accident occurred because of the driver's medical issue.

Update, 3 p.m.: The driver of a sport utility vehicle that crashed into the side of the Sag Harbor Post Office on Thursday is believe to have suffered a medical event, according to Village Police Chief Tom Fabiano.

The woman, who was in her 50s, was unconscious due to the medical issue and was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center by helicopter, Fabiano said. Her vehicle jumped the curb in the parking lot off Long Island Avenue, went over the sidewalk, and slammed into the building, causing damage to the Post Office and the vehicle.

He said no charges or tickets are anticipated.

Meanwhile, the postal employees said the branch remains open, despite damage to the side of the building, including a hole in the wall and a crumbling brick façade.

Village Building Inspector Tim Platt said he recommended that the post office seek out a structural engineering to determine the building's integrity after the crash. However, he said he has no jurisdiction over the federal building.

The SUV hit the side of the post office from the parking lot just off of Long Island Avenue sometime before noon. The brick on the post office around where the impact took place was crumbling and a fire marshal has been called to make sure the building is structurally sound.

The Sag Harbor Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported the driver, a woman who was reportedly trapped in the vehicle after the accident occurred, to Havens Beach to meet a Medevac helicopter.

No one else was injured.
