Wading River Woman Charged With Violating Leandra's Law

Woman charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs with a child under 15 years old in the vehicle.

A Wading River woman was charged with a felony violation of Leandra's Law on Monday night when she was arrested on charges of driving while ability impaired with a child under the age of 15 in the vehicle.

Riverhead Police arrested Mary McKenna, 51, a little before 6 p.m. after an off-duty police officer driving behind McKenna noticed her 1996 Chevrolet moving erratically while travelling westbound on Route 25 in Calverton, police said. 

Police reported that the off-duty cop called in the erratic driver and police stopped McKenna around the Wading River Motel – her listed residence – on Route 25.

According to police, McKenna showed signs of being under the influence of drugs after she was stopped by a uniformed officer. Her 12-year-old son was also in the vehicle.

In addition to being charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, she was charged with a class-E felony for violating Leandra's Law and endangering the welfare of a child. She was held for a Tuesday morning arraignment and her son was turned over to his father.
