Bill to Transfer Armory to Town Passes State Senate

If bill passes state Assembly, Route 58 building would be future home of town police department and justice court.

The New York State Senate recently passed a bill which would transfer the New York State Armory on Route 58 to town hands, to be used as a new home for the Riverhead Police Department and Town Justice Court.

The bill, which was sponsored by state Sen. Ken LaValle, R-Port Jefferson, in the state Senate and Assemblyman Dan Losquadro, R-Shoreham, in the Assembly, will now be sent to the Assembly for a vote.

“Riverhead Town’s repurposing of the armory site will enable the Town of Riverhead Police Department and Justice Court to be relocated, and with it the ability to better serve and protect the public and administer justice.”

Supervisor Sean Walter recently said that should both bills pass the state Legislature, the next step would be to have an engineering firm design a retrofitted plan for the building, comprising minimal changes to the armory to lower costs.

The 5.7-acre parcel was originally deeded to the state in 1953 from the Riverhead Water District for $500.
