The Town Board is seeking a couple of members to add to its soon-to-be-formed audit committee, a group of individuals who will oversee the town's soon-to-be internal auditor.

Upon the advice of its outside auditors, Hauppauge-based Albrecht, Viggiano, Zureck and Company, the town is planning to hire a part-time independent internal auditor who will report not to the town's chief financial administrator, Bill Rothaar, but rather to the committee.

So far, the committee — which is expected to be formed officially at the board's next meeting — is composed of Supervisor Sean Walter, Councilman John Dunleavy, and Jack Orben, a retired investment banker and former Industrial Development Agency member who lives in Aquebogue.

Rothaar and Walter chose Charlene Kagel as the internal auditor, with a contract expected to be for $20,000. Kagel is the current treasurer of the Village of Greenport and former financial commissioner of Brookhaven Town. The town does not have to bid on contracting an auditor, as it is a professional services contract, Rothaar said.

Rothaar said he's unsure exactly when the town will be able to hire Kagel. In the meantime, the board is expected to get the audit committee in place, make a list of its priorities and finalize its members.
