County Seeks Private Partner to Restore Historic Hunting Lodge

The Black Duck Lodge in Hubbard County Park is one of two county-wide to kick off the pilot Historic Homes Program.

Want to bring back a local piece of history? Private parties are being sought by Suffolk County as it hopes to restore the Black Duck Lodge in Flanders, a former exclusive hunting getaway that has since fallen into disrepair in Hubbard County Park.

Legis. Wayne Horsley announced that the program – first pitched in 2011 – will bring the structures up to speed, maintaining their historical integrity as private contractors work with the county.

“Suffolk County has a vibrant history and unfortunately, several historical structures in our county parks have fallen into disrepair,” said Horsley. “The Historic Homes Pilot Program underscores our community’s appreciation of history and commitment to the enrichment of our society through historical preservation."

First acquired by Suffolk in the early 1970s along with the 1,800 acres in the Flanders area, the Black Duck Lodge has since fallen prey to vandals and the elements.

The Historic Homes Program seeks to partner with private parties who restore the locations – the Elwood School House is another of two starting the program, with others to follow – and rent them at a nominal fee over a long-term lease, keeping them partially open to the public as the county retains ownership rights.

Interested entities may obtain an Request for Expression of Interest by calling the Suffolk County Parks Department at 631-854-4949. Submissions are due July 18.
