Riverhead joins in development rights purchase, as part of 7.2 million county and town acquisition.

The Town of Riverhead has teamed up with Suffolk County on the $1.2 million purchase of development rights for more than 18 acres of farmland on the north side of Sound Avenue in Riverhead, owned by the family.

As part of the deal, the Harbes family, which has farmed the land since 1978, will retain ten acres of woodland to the north and four acres of frontage on Sound Avenue, which includes a farmhouse and several agricultural buildings.

The Harbes name is synonymous with farming and family entertainment both in the Town of Riverhead and the . Since 1978, the family-run operation features a farmer's market, a country café, a winery and various seasonal events at both its Mattituck and Riverhead locations.

In addition to partnering with the Town of Riverhead on the farm acquisition, Suffolk County has also teamed up with the Town of Brookhaven to purchase 58 acres along the North Shore known as Woodhull Landing. According to a county statement, the property, which consists of two parcels of woodlands adjacent to the Miller Place Primary School, will be used for recreation, offering trails for hiking and nature study.
