High Bacteria Level Closes Riverhead Beach

No swimming allowed until further notice.

High bacteria levels have closed one Riverhead beach — the Dorothy P. Flint 4-H Camp Beach — to bathers until further notice.

Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of Health Services for Suffolk County, announced on Thursday that the beach would be closed to bathing due to the finding of bacterial levels in excess of acceptable criteria.

The beach will remain closed until health officials are able to determine that the water quality is acceptable, Tomarken said.

In most cases, closed beaches are sampled on a daily basis an effort to reopen them as soon as possible.
