Rep. Tim Bishop lauds winning Riverhead High School varsity girls basketball team.

Rep. Tim Bishop met with members of the Riverhead High School varsity girls basketball team, the Blue Waves, on Tuesday to commend them on and enter a statement into the congressional record.

"I hope that you carry through your life the joy you felt at your success this season, the recognition you received from this rightfully proud community, and the lesson that if you work together towards a common goal, you can accomplish great things," Bishop told the girls.

The statement entered into the congressional record recounts the team's accomplishments, including going "all the way" to the Class AA Final Four tournament in New York for the first time in history, as  well as winning the 2012 Long Island Championship, the and the Suffolk County Section XI championship.

In addition, Bishop noted, Coach Dave Spinelli was named Suffolk County Coach of the Year and senior guard Jalyn Brown, a first-team All-Long Island player. A was held in Riverhead to honor the girls last month.

Riverhead School Superintendent Nancy Carney has said she is most proud that the girls also comprise a New York State Scholar Athlete Team, excelling at academics with a cumulative grade point average of 93.1 -- an honor the team earned for the seventh consecutive year.

A framed copy of the statement will be displayed in the trophy case with the team's trophies. Copies were given to team members, coaches, and school administrators.
