Hundreds attended the ceremony on Veterans Day that honored those who fought and died for our country.

Hundreds of veterans, families and friends gathered at the Calverton National Cemetery on Veterans Day to honor those who served America.

Among the speakers at the ceremony was Rep. Tim Bishop, D-Southampton, who told the story of Pfc. Garfield Langhorn, a Riverhead native who sacrificed his life during the Vietnam War by jumping on a grenade to save his fellow soldiers.

Bishop said very few of those gathered would be in such a situation in their lifetimes, but said that we should learn from Langhorn's courage and apply that strength to our own lives.

"We all talk about honoring veterans, as well we should," Bishop said, "but what I would ask is that each of us not just talk about honoring veterans, but that we try to take some of the characteristics that made Garfield Langhorn who he was, that made so many others who they are. We can each try to be a little bit better at what we do. We can each try to challenge ourselves a little bit more."
