Poll Results: Overwhelming Support for Drag Racing at EPCAL

What are you favorite memories of drag racing on the East End?

The results are in -- and, in a Riverhead Patch poll, so far, of 116 individuals who responded, 108 would l at Enterprise Park at Calverton.

The overwhelming majority of readers who commented mourned the loss of including Westhampton, Bridgehampton, and Islip.

Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter said recently that plans for EPCAL  include a racing country club, where members would pay to join and race on a quarter mile track.

But, the supervisor added, although  and  are two uses that have residents divided passionately on both sides, the bottom line is that before any future use can be discussed, the subdivision process and environmental review by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation must be completed first.

We'd like you to share your memories of drag racing on the East End. Do you have any photos you can share? We want to hear what the sport meant to you and your family when there were racing strips on the East End. Please share your thoughts in the comments section.

Save the polo crap for fla and give us back a damn racetrack!!
Argile August 06, 2012 at 04:57 PM
Polo ponies? Is that a joke? I've never heard of people gathering together for a polo pony show. But I have heard of thousands on Long Island getting together for a car show. On a weekly basis. All year round.

Give us a track the traveling made my grandpa get out of the sport me and my dad spend $350 every other weekend just to go racing
Michael Anthony August 06, 2012 at 07:27 PM
Everytime I confronted a politician it was always the same reply "there's no money for that" are you kidding me me personally wouldn't hesitate to spend a hundred or two for some good ol school heads up every weekend!
Michael Anthony August 06, 2012 at 07:29 PM
I remember being able to drive to the track with my older brothers and changing into some slicks and enjoying the day.

There's only money for it if the politicians are corrupt and accept bribes or cash under the table. So in short the polo ponies will win out because the rich snobs will more than likely grease the palms of the politicians and us middle class folk will be left out in the cold as usual.

i only remember good things..my parents got me off the streets drag racing and got me to use the track here on long island...i later got my son into drag racing at the track...it was a family thing....which we still do ..only out of ny....as i see all the street racing on long island..i feel that it would be a wonderful life saving deterrent..if we had a track back on the island...looking at the cars that show up at car shows etc...it would make things safer..and save lives....not to mention hiring and helping the economy which is sorely needed.....comeone riverhead...we got the technology to keep it quiet...we have the land that is sitting idle...we need tax revenu etc...and there are a ton of people that go out of state to race...its a win win situation...build the track...

Bring back the track!!! I was to young to ever witness any of the drag strips, all I hear is people talking about how much more simple it was to go out to westhampton for a few hours make a few passes and go home. Now we have to trailer out cars out of state paying hundreds in fuel and tolls to make 3 or 4 passes. If it were local we'd be able to spend all of that money here in our own economy! Its a no brainer!

Joseph Mig Migliaccio Well I have lots of fond memories about Drag racing on LI I do not know were too start. But what I will say is a few weekend's ago I went to a Drag Racing event in PA and I could not believe all the people and race cars from LI and Bklyn an d Queens that was there. I know the whole day along with my two children costs me about 180.00 food gas tolls entry fee and I did not even bring a car to race and that was just one day (Sunday) of a 4 day event. Think of the job's and money LI can gain by making a Drag strip.
