'Save Main Road' Members Seek to 'Occupy' Town Hall

Group is asking residents to turn out in full force on Thursday.

A crowd of residents is expected to "occupy" Riverhead Town Hall on Thursday night for a scheduled planning board hearing on a controversial proposed Jamesport development.

This week, the "Save Main Road" group has sent out a Facebook message, imploring residents to "Occupy Town Hall" during a planning board meeting scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. where a site plan hearing on the " is on the agenda.

The application, submitted by Jul-Bet Enterprises, involves a 42,000 square foot plan that includes bistros, retail establishments and medical offices, which would be sited on Route 25 across from Cliff's Elbow Room.

"Let your voice be heard," the message on Facebook reads.

The Save Main Road group hopes to preserve the character of Main Road from Route 105 east to Laurel, to the Southold Town border.

The Riverhead town board voted recently to permits that would allow for bistros and professional offices at a proposed development in Jamesport.

 with residents imploring the board not to move forward. Residents felt the concept needed more public discourse.

In April, the "Save Main Road" group met to discuss  and commenced a drive to raise funds toward that end.

Georgette Keller, a founder of the "Save Main Road" organization, announced at the meeting that the group had retained Westhampton attorney Bo Bishop, who provided concessions in his fees to provide oversight during the site plan review process regarding the controversial Village at Jamesport proposal.

In addition, said group member Larry Simms, the plan is to seek an Article 78 to overturn the recent decision by the Riverhead Town Board.
