Suffolk County Opens Emergency Shelters Sunday Morning

County Executive Steve Bellone asks residents to make arrangements in case of heavy flooding.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has asked all residents to be prepared as Hurricane Sandy continues tracking northward.

To that end, those living in areas likely to flood are asked to make alternative arrangements and frequent Red Cross shelters.

So far, three Red Cross shelters are slated to open at 8 a.m. on Sunday. Residents can choose between Hampton Bays High School, located at 88 Argonne Avenue in Hampton Bays, Sachem East High School, located at 177 Granny Road in Farmingville, and Brentwood High School's Sonderling Building, located at 52 Third Avenue in Brentwood.

Suffolk County, in conjunction with the SPCA, will open two pet-friendly shelters at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Brentwood Rec Center, located at 99 Third Avenue in Brentwood, and at the Suffolk County Community College's Eastern Campus, Woodlands Building, located at 121 Speonk-Riverhead Road, in Riverside.

All Suffolk County Parks will close at 6 p.m. on Sunday; all campers will be asked to leave the parks at noon.

Earlier on Saturday, go-bags and checking for updates.
