Town Animal Shelter Spotlights "Sonya" For Adoption

The pup will be introduced at Tuesday's town board meeting.

One of the dogs waiting for adoption at the Riverhead animal shelter will pay a visit to Town Hall on Tuesday for her moment in the spotlight.

Sonja, an American Staffordshire Terrier mix is a spayed female, approximately six years old.

According to shelter staff, Sonja was surrendered to the shelter by her previous owners when they could no longer keep her. She is housebroken, kows basic commands, loves walks and to play with chew toys.

Sonja, who previously lived in a home with dogs smaller than her and got along well with them, would do better in a home without cats -- and older children are preferred.

She is up to date with all her vaccinations and microchipped.

In recent weeks, that they have not been allowed by Riverhead Town Police to enter the town animal shelter to film adoption videos. Riverhead Town Police Chief David Hegermiller said he has never been formally approached with a request to do so.

Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter said Sonja's appearance on Tuesday had nothing to do with the issue of the adoption videos and that he has made it a practice since taking office to feature one dog at every monthly afternoon town board meeting, with an eye toward boosting adoptions.
