Video: Vets Celebrated at Local Memorial, Calverton National Cemetery

Vets speak their mind on importance of holiday; ceremonies draw hundreds from all across Long Island.

At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year, celebrations and ceremonies began for veterans all around the country. The time and date refer to the armistice signed following World War I, and at 11:11 at the World War Memorial, Riverhead's ceremony began. Approximately 75 people showed up as veterans and members of the women's auxiliary placed memorial wreaths at the monument, volleys were fired to salute those who served, and Supervisor Sean Walter spoke to the crowd about our community's need to remember those who have risked their lives.

A 1:00 ceremony followed at the Calverton National Cemetery, drawing a crowd numbered in the hundreds. Veterans from all of Long Island presented their colors and Rep. Tim Bishop, D - Southampton, and Arthur Smith of the Department of Veterans Affairs served as guest speakers.
