Walter Crowned 'King of the Peconic'

And the winner of the cardboard boat race is Sean Walter, crown and all.

Spirit were high in Riverhead Town Hall on Tuesday when Supervisor Sean Walter was crowned -- literally -- King of the Peconic.

Councilman George Gabrielsen presented Walter with the crown and lauded him for taking the title from Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst during the annual cardboard boat race on Saturday.

The two supervisors vie each year for the title. Last year, Throne-Holst won.

And, said Walter, she was so confident this year that she didn't bring the trophy to the event.

"We're going to mount a posse to go to Southampton and get that trophy," Walter said.

Gabrielsen noted that Throne-Holst, a fellow Norwegian, failed to win despite the seafaring legacy left by the Vikings. "It broke my heart a little that my Norwegian  brethren didn't win," he joked.
