The Disappointing Jobs Report

The jobs picture on Long Island is not getting better.

Another week, another disappointing jobs report.  And, predictably, still no plan put forward by incumbent Congressman Tim Bishop to fix this economic mess.

Congressman Bishop likes to blame other people for the economic woes facing Long Island.

In Tim Bishop’s world, he’s never accountable. He never takes responsibility. It’s always some else’s fault.

Well, the fact of the matter is that Tim Bishop deserves his share of the blame for our dismal economy and soaring unemployment here on Long Island.

According to the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 45,272 more people unemployed on Long Island today than there were the day that Tim Bishop was sworn into Congress nearly a decade ago.

Long Island’s unemployment rate has risen from 5.2% all the way up to 8%. That’s a 54% increase!

Congressman Bishop’s repeated votes for trillions in higher taxes, more spending and irresponsible debt have helped to cripple Long Island’s economy and put our nation more than $16 trillion in debt.

His rabid support for President Obama’s big government takeover of healthcare has only made it worse for small businesses too afraid to hire new workers.

The $700 billion in cuts to Medicare and multitude of new tax increases that are being implemented to pay for Obamacare will only make Suffolk County a more expensive place to live, work, raise a family and retire.

It’s clear that we need to change Congress.  And we can start by changing our Congressman.

I am running with a specific , boost small businesses and grow Long Island’s economy. My plan will help to make Suffolk County more affordable for middle-class families, small businesses and seniors on a fixed income already struggling to pay sky-high property taxes.

I urge you to read the whole plan at www.Randy2012.com/jobsplan or call my Campaign Headquarters at 631-775-9230 and we will send you a copy.

With your support for me on November 6th, we will work together to fix the mess in Washington and move Suffolk County in a new, more positive direction.

Randy Altschuler

Candidate for Congress NY-1

robkoz September 11, 2012 at 09:21 pm
Hey John, I'm voting for Randy again because things have gotten worse here on LI and Tim Bishop likes to hand out other people's money to people and companies that handled it irresponsibly. I voted for Bishop the first 2 times. It's time for someone else. And if Randy doesn't deliver, then I vote him out next time too.
John Gruber September 11, 2012 at 09:31 pm
agreed Bishop is probably no good at this point but god forbid we elect someone who isn't D or R
John Gruber September 11, 2012 at 09:36 pm
Jag you continually post facts that are not true (lies) yet you complain about Obama lying? Seriously, almost every one of your posts have been not only debated, but throughly proven WRONG, but you must be like all politicians who assume the majority of the people listening to you will just read or hear and accept it without doing some thinking and research on your own. you damage your own intelligence by criticizing someone with lies. if you don't like him fine, but at least have some REAL reasons why
John Gruber September 11, 2012 at 09:43 pm
because preliator unemployment has more to do with unions than politics. we all agree outsourcing is a problem that sacrifices jobs here, do we not? these unions are what drives up costs for American products by forcing companies to pay salaries and benefits that force them to raise prices or outsource production to cheaper labor countries. these unions served a very important purpose in the past but have gotten to the point that they are hurting this economy just to secure extra money and benefits for their members, which causes lay offs and outsourcing, 2 of THE BIGGEST contributors to unemployment

"12 million jobs in the next 4 years"-Ryan . Sound a little like last election? and people just believe everything these people say. sad
Whale Ofaguy September 12, 2012 at 12:26 am
Altschuler cannot be allowed to win. He is the key to the Republican's passage of the Romney-Ryan budget in the House, which rejected it in the first round of votes. It contains billions of dollars of VA benefit cuts. He must go down and Romney's Budget go down with him and the entire GOP affair. Veterans must come out to save their benefits. I'll be voting for Bishop, who has actually done a lot of good work for veterans. Altschuler has done nothing and never served his country. Like Romney, he has promised everything to everyone free of any charges, but will not be able to deliver once in office. We don't need a Freshman in Congress when there's so much work yet to be done. Bishop has our vote.
Preliator September 12, 2012 at 10:43 am
Look this is pretty simple; if you don't have a job and want one, want a better job or maybe hope that things get better, vote for Romney. If you don't want a job, want to be a ward of the state and think things are okay, vote for Obama.

HHS - Don't you place ANY blame on Democrats for the failure of this government to accomplish anything at all ?? Honestly HHS. It is amazing that you think you are correct every single time - in every single post - on every single topic. It is statistically impossible. As for the last topic, I asked if you opposed the Key Stone Pipeline - that's all. Easy Question.
Jaguar-Guy September 12, 2012 at 11:34 am
It is not as simple as saying - "the Republicans are to blame" HHS. Democrats AND Republicans have taken us to the financial cliff, and we are looking at a meltdown.
I will say this, one day after 9/11 - that President Obama has been VERY VERY VERY strong on firghting terrorists, and I am thankful for that. NOT closing Guantanimo, the Drone attacks taking out Al Quada and leader after replaced leader has kept us safe from attack these past 4 years, just as Bush kept us safe for all the years following 9/11. See, I can compliment as well. Have a good one HHS.

Crickets from Dave on that one.
Jaguar-Guy September 12, 2012 at 11:36 am
Hey Dave, what year was that quote lifted from - 2009 ??? Please - each VOLT sold costs US taxpayers $48,000.00. Thanks GM and Obama.
John Gruber September 12, 2012 at 03:30 pm
you have no idea how romney is going to do, anything anyone says to that point is PURE SPECULATION. and the fact that you think this was going to be fixed in 4 years just shows how shortsighted people can be. he says the same crap as Obama regarding jobs and debt, but THIS must be the ONE president who keeps campaign promises then...

6:22 pm on Monday, September 10, 2012 I have had experience..... I little Timmy bishop have worked for the goverment my entire adult life. When I got out of college I got a job in college wasting money. so much so that the college went broke despite massive federal and state subsidies. This experence prepared me to go to washington where I could waste billions. Vote for me because I have never created one job anywhere and certainly not overseas. If reelected I promise to do more of the same. FREE CHEESE

I do know that anything Mitt Romney is going to do is going to be better than anything Obama has planned. We know what Obama has done and four more years of failure, incompetence and weakness is unacceptable. Now scurry off and drink your cool-aid and cheer the Apologist-in-chief as he tries to find a way to blame us for Cairo and Benghazi and forgive, again, the terrorists and murderers.
Preliator September 12, 2012 at 04:10 pm
I have an idea for a part 11 to Randy's plan;
11. End all foreign aid and invest that money in the United States.
Paul Hart September 12, 2012 at 04:23 pm
One-third of ALL US AID goes to Israel and Egypt the majority of which pays for armaments. The stipulation being they have to spend most of it on good old USA weapons. I guess companies like Lockheed, Northrop Grumman and other weapons manufacturers are the chief beneficiaries.

that right there shows how dangerous a vote like yours can be, you don't what romney is going to do but you KNOW it's going to be better than Obama. since you're clearly so good at predicting the future, how bout next weeks lottery number? you're so drastically warped by anything anti-obama you'll think and believe anything. BTW the dow has double since he took office and unemployment hovers around 8%, not to far from when Bush left off, and the world's most wanted man was killed, not exactly a failure. so who's drinking the kool-aid?
Stinker September 12, 2012 at 05:12 pm
"cannot be allowed to win". I think you meant to post on the North Korea Patch.
Preliator September 12, 2012 at 05:42 pm
*Unemployment is at 8.1 % not because of job creation but people losing hope and giving up on finding a job. I would not call that a win.
*Why has the DOW done so well, credit TARP that came in with George W. Bush and the various bailouts in Europe. You can e-mail him a thank you today. * OBL was killed by Navy SEALs after Obama passed on the raid three times. Obam had to be dragged into the decision by Clinton, thank her too. *The debt broke the $16 trillion mark as Obama spends money at double the rate his predecessor did. Obama called Bush unpatriotic for his spending, by his own measure Obama is a f-ing traitor. *You, you are drinking the f-ing kool-aide.
Preliator September 12, 2012 at 05:42 pm
I don't care where the aid goes, it needs to stop.
Preliator September 12, 2012 at 06:09 pm
*Obama promised to close Gitmo; still open.
*Obama promised immigration reform; did nothing. *Obama promised to cut the debt in half; added over $5 trillion. *Obama promised his Stimulus would lower unemployment; still above 8%. *Obama promised Obamacare would cost only $900 billion, cost projections have passed 1.6 trillion and are expect to break $2 trillion. *Obama has ignored his own debt commission. *Obama has not met with his job council in almost 9 months. *Obama has apologized to the world for America, calling his own country arrogant. *Obama did not end the war in Iraq, he followed the Bush timeline, all agreed upon before he ever took office. *Obama opposed the very mechanisms that allowed for the successful raid that took down OBL and you want to give him credit?

Bin Laden is dead and GM is alive is the biggest bunch of BS in the history of politics. Obama was fortunate enough to have been in office when the guy was finally hunted down by U.S. intelligence. And lets also be honest here. Bin Laden was being hunted during the Clinton administration, so any one of the three, Clinton, Bush or Obama could have been in office when the call came that he was found. Now, as for GM. In case you all blindly believe what you hear, these are the facts. GM did go BANKRUPT. It filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection with the court and emerged as a new company, as did Chrysler. But here is the rub.....the bankruptcy proceedings were nursemaided through the courts by the Obama Administration. By circumventing the law, they were able to preserve union contracts and jobs and hose bondholders who had a legal first claim to all assets out of billions of dollars. And by the way....Obama's auto team was headed up by, among others, Steven Rattner, who is estimated to be worth over $100 million dollars. But Mitt is the bad guy because he is rich, right?
John Gruber September 12, 2012 at 09:10 pm
hey Jaguar Guy, what was it you were saying about confirmed liars? you're a gigantic HYPOCRIT

1) Pakistan is considered an "ally" in the loose term among Muslim nations, if you're not sure why he would hesitate to launch an assassination attempt into one of our only allied Muslim countries, try thinking hard.
2) DJIA has increased by almost 100% 3) unemployment has stayed consistent, he failed on his campaign promise (gasp!) that doesn't mean he's doing terrible, it hasn't gotten worse 4) the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have cost much more than that "projected" 1.6 trillion so why don't I see you protesting those? I agree with them, which is why the cost of "obamacare" doesn't really bother me because if you want to cut that amount of money, HEALTHCARE isn't the place 5) as the commander in chief of the armed forces, he does deserve credit, never said I gave him all of it or even the majority. if you claim Bush prevented us from being attacked again, you have to give credit to Obama for killing the man who attacked us
John Gruber September 12, 2012 at 09:36 pm
6) republicans are notorious for deregulation of business which was a big contributor to the financial crisis, and Romney doesn't appear to be changing from that stance, from my experience
7) I do not believe Obama has been very successful, but people like you expected this to be solved overnight (or even 1 term) which was not going to happen. I believe we are SLIGHTLY better than we were 4 years ago, which at least lets me consider Obama and not the guy hiding his money from the place he claims he's going to save. 8) If I was drinking the kool-aid like the one you are, I'd claim Mitt will do absolutely nothing and destroy America as we know it today, like you claim about Obama. not me. I just don't necessarily believe his policies will "save" america like you and him claim he will. that's called INDEPENDENT THINKING. just because I agree with someone doesn't mean I subscribe to all of their beliefs. you can vote one way or the other without being labeled as one of the other
highhatsize September 12, 2012 at 09:53 pm
to John Gruber:
Dear god, why didn't he just say that he exaggerated? No one who has ever run a marathon believes that anyone who has could make an "honest mistake" in reporting his 4 hr. plus finishing time as a 2:50 finishing time.
John Gruber September 12, 2012 at 09:57 pm
not just that, be he lied about a MARATHON, something that has absolutely NOTHING to do with politics, what makes you believe he'll tell the truth about that? logic would tell you nothing
GM September 12, 2012 at 10:00 pm
From what I heard at RNC, the republican response to unemployment is: " let the free market prevail"; "if you can't make it here, then move"; "why are you taking unemployment (gov handout), you commie good-for-nothing"; "get a job".
John Gruber September 12, 2012 at 10:10 pm
the "free market" they refer to is one in which corporations run the place, much like they do now which is one of the reasons for the financial crisis
