Blog: Take a Hike in the Pine Barrens

The Long Island Pine Barrens Society Trail Guide will help you make the most of the wonderful trail system right out your backdoor. Find a new place to explore just minutes from Riverhead.

Are you looking to take advantage of this warmer winter weather we're having? Get outside and take a hike!

There are many nature trails, parks and open space preserves open to the public for free- and they're just minutes away from Riverhead. Convenient to both North and South Forks, the Pine Barrens stretches across 100,000 acres through the townships of Brookhaven, Riverhead and Southampton.

The Long Island Pine Barrens Society has been working for 34 years to protect Long Island's premier ecosystem, which boasts the greatest diversity of plants and animals found anywhere in New York State. In addition to the Pine Barrens, Suffolk County and the towns on the East End have also preserved tens of thousands of acres of open space that are accessible to the public.

Expert naturalist and outdoorsman, and Long Island Pine Barrens Society Board Member Thomas Casey wrote the guides that accompany each suggested route. Casey has included tips on what special plants and animals to look for, and which birds' calls might provide the soundtrack for your hike.

Local graphic designer, illustrator and avid outdoorswoman Gail Evans meticulously mapped each route using GPS technology- so you can follow along and not worry about getting off course.

To access electronic copies of the guide and maps to download and print at home or store on your smartphone, visit www.pinebarrens.org/hiking.asp

The Society can also mail you a full color copy of the guide for a small donation to offset printing and shipping costs. Just call 631-369-3300 to request your copy!

HAPPY HIKING!
