Bullying Addressed At Riverhead High School

Kids will view a presentation on Tuesday morning.

With the a 30 day jail sentence and community service hours handed down this week to Dharun Ravi, the Rutgers University student charged with invasion of privacy and minor counts of bias intimidation after he allegedly used a webcam to spy on his roommate, Tyler Clementi, engaged in an intimate encounter with another man -- Clementi later committed suicide -- bullying is front and center in the news.

To that end, Riverhead High School students will attend an assembly on Tuesday morning focused on bullying presented by "Stories of Substance."

The group uses drama, humor and music to raise awareness and educate students about how to make healthy choices.

The performance, which is written by students, recreates real-life situations and explains the critical connection between low-esteem, bullying, depression, domestic violence and substance abuse, said Sandra Kolbo, public information officer for the Riverhead School District.
