High School Rowers Bring Home Silver In States

Students also brought home two bronze medals.

Members of the Riverhead High School rowing team made their hometown proud when they won medals in four events at the New York State Scholastic Rowing Championships in Saratoga Springs, New York on May 11 and 12.

Racing against 73 teams, Riverhead High School Rowing Team won two silver medals and two bronze medals.

Ethan Zaweski and Jonathan Schmitt finished second overall, winning silver in the Boys Lightweight 150 Double.

Schmitt also won bronze with Rohan Sment in the Boys Pair race.

Sment and Schmitt made the decision to switch to a sweep event at the last moment and were able to medal with only four practices in the boat -- it was the first medal for Riverhead High School in a senior sweep event at the New York State Championships.

The Girls Senior Quadruple Sculls came home with silver medals in their event, finishing as second fastest scholastic boat, with Erin Hesler, Emily Harsch, Samantha Kuepp and Amber Giambone racing.

Also a first for Riverhead, Anthony Ortega, Tristin Krueger, Ivan Stapon and Liam Sment won bronze in the Boys Novice Four club event with Kara Reese of McGann Mercy as their coxswain -- the first medal for Riverhead in a sweep event, and the first year that Riverhead has had novice rowers qualify for the state championships.

Finishing fourth for Riverhead were freshmen Boys Double Bryce McKissick and Nolan Renshaw.  Because there were no novice or freshmen double events at States, the boys raced in the Senior Lightweight 160 Double event.
