Homecoming Parade Full Of Hometown Spirit

Crowds came out to cheer on the Blue Waves in Riverhead on Saturday. Share your photos here, too.

Main Street was bursting with hometown spirit on Saturday as the community came together to celebrate Riverhead High School students at a Homecoming Parade leading up to the big homecoming game, where the Blue Waves faced off against Newfield High School.

Waving and cheering, residents packed East Main Street as the parade, filled with Riverhead High School students and young cheerleaders and athletes, as well as creative floats designed by the kids, wound its way toward the high school.

"Our high school students are fully immersed in celebrating homecoming week and in planning for Saturday’s parade and game," Nancy Carney,Riverhead Central School District Superintendent said earlier this week. "The spirit throughout the building is one of excitement and pride. We are all looking forward to a terrific day on Saturday."

Saturday's full day of events began with the annual Homecoming Parade. This year's theme for the Homecoming Parade was "Pixar Films," with freshmen representing the film "Brave," sophomores, "Monsters, Inc.," juniors, "Finding Nemo," and seniors, the movie "Up."

Spirit week was filled with events: Tuesday was Neon Day, Wednesday was American Pride Day, and Thursday was Class Color day, with seniors wearing black, juniors, white, sophomores, blue, and freshmen, yellow plaid.

Homecoming Day in Riverhead was quintessential, small town America. The enthusiastic crowds and supporters there, not just for RHS Football, but for the entire school district, showed community pride that is what this country was built on! It was a beautiful, crisp, Fall day as the Riverhead Varsity football team came to win and secure a playoff berth. And win, they did! An exciting, hard hitting game highlighted an absolutely wonderfully fun day here in Riverhead!!! We need to get back to this way of life, where community, simplicity, and tradition, not only here, but across our country will most certainly be the path to get this country back to prosperity. YES...I truly belive...it IS that simple.

Paw, I couldn't agree with you more. Community, tradition, the belief in shared values. . .those are what make Riverhead the wonderful place that it is. Marching in that parade, I could feel the exuberance, the pride, and the enthusiasm of all the young people and residents. It was such an uplifting day. Thank you for posting.
