Letter: School Supe Fills Public in on Budget Process

Superintendent Nancy Carney says $3.2 million in cuts are still being made as the district heads into budget season, invites public to attend meetings.

As school districts all over New York State swing into budget season, Riverhead Superintendent Nancy Carney posted a letter on the district's website on Monday to taxpayers, parents, students, and anyone else interested in the district about where the Riverhead Central School District stands heading into things.

Specifically she addresses the complex 2 percent tax levy cap - - and how it will , a sentiment she has expressed at recent school board meetings.

She writes: "After doing all of the mandated calculations in the tax cap formula, we have determined that our levy can rise by no more than $1.815 million, meaning that we have to find ways to trim about $3.2 million out of our budget next year ... The cuts have not yet been finalized, but each one is difficult and not taken lightly."
