Second graders at Calverton elementary school paint boxes green, ask classmates and teachers to toss paper in there instead of trash.

Second graders at started working on a school-wide recycling project recently, painting up some cardboard boxes the color green to remind classmates and teachers to recycle their paper.

Lauren McDonald's class at Riley will collect the boxes once a week at the school and bundle it together for Keith Brown, head custodian at Riley, to be transported to 's recycling bin.

McDonald said her class was inspired by International Polar Bear Day.

“We are doing this project to help reduce our carbon footprint and to help save the polar bears," states Mrs. McDonald. "International Polar Bear Day is today, Feb. 27th, and we wanted to take action in an effort to reduce the CO2 in the atmosphere."
