A Riverhead High School student received a tremendous honor this week.
Cadet Harold Hubbard has been selected for an $180,000 Reserve Officers' Training Corp scholarship.
The Navy Immediate Scholarship Reservation award, to the college of Hubbard's choice, was presented to him by Commander John Skarin on Tuesday.
The same type of scholarship was awarded to Riverhead High School student Amanda Gallo last year.
Cadet Hubbard, like Gallo, was one of only six students in Riverhead's NJROTC area district, which includes northern New Jersey, New York City, parts of Westchester, and Long Island, to be chosen to receive the scholarship.
Cadet Hubbard plans to study aeronautical engineering in college and plans to become a pilot.
In other NJROTC news, Cadets Harold Hubbard and Nicholas Deschamps attended the General Tommy Franks Four Star Leadership Academy for a week in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Only 50 students are selected nationwide. Cadet Hubbard also attended a week-long science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) seminar at Embry Riddle University in Daytona Beach, Florida; the session was fully funded by the Navy.
The busy young man was also chosen as the Boys State representative from Riverhead High School and spent a week in June at SUNY Morrisville; the event was sponsored by the Riverhead American Legion.
