Riverhead Cadets Excel at Leadership Training

Four Riverhead NJROTC cadets were chosen for the competitive program.

Four Riverhead High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp cadets worked even during the summer to make their hometown proud.

The students graduated last week from a Leadership Academy and Sail Training program at the Naval Base in Newport, Rhode Island.

The cadets, Aleki Lui, Brianne Corwin, Ashlyn Whyard and Joanne Yeung, successfully completed two weeks of intensive training in preparation for increased leadership responsibilities in Riverhead High School's NJROTC program during the coming semester.

Cadet Lui won a first place sailing trophy and Cadet Corwin, a first place orienteering trophy and a third place sailing medal.

The four cadets were part of a group of 146 NJROTC participants who attended the program, which included leadership skills training and sail training that concluded with a regatta in Narragansett Bay.

The selection process is considered highly competitive, and is based on grade point average, physical fitness, aptitude, and a demonstration of leadership traits.

Cadets work towards earning the Silver Cord, a symbol of having achieved the Academy's high standards of individual and team accomplishment.
