Riverhead Girls Cross Country Team Wins Against Walt Whitman

Riverhead girls scored to win at Tuesday's cross country event.

It was the first victory of the season Tuesday as the Riverhead High School Girls Cross Country team seized a League III victory against Walt Whitman High School, at the Indian Island 5K course.

The score was Riverhead, 24, to Walt Whitman, 33.

Top performers were senior Rachel Conti, 22:23, sophomore Meghan Van Bommel, 22:36, and sophomore Megan Carrick, 22:41; the girls placed second, third and fourth, leading the team to their first win this semester.

In the youth division, freshman Gabrielle Marcucci ran time of 23:34 on her birthday and came across the line as Riverhead’s fourth runner to place; eighth grader Grace Dillingham ran a time of 24:55, her personal best. Junior Maurinne Sullivan crossed the line at 24:29 to round out Riverhead’s top five.

The team is 1 -1 in League III.
