Fifty-eight NJROTC Units started the Drill season in September, which culminated in the Area Four Championship Drill Meet last Saturday at Colts Neck High School in New Jersey. Riverhead High School’s NJROTC Drill Team competed as one of the top 10 qualifying schools.

The competition was a pressure packed event with the best teams in the northeast competing for honors. Riverhead High School’s team faced of with some powerhouse teams, including teams that recently competed at the National level.

The competition was intense all day long as team after team put in solid performances. The Riverhead cadets responded to the pressure by performing up to their capabilities and bringing their ‘A’ game to the competition and had their best overall performances of the year.

“The Riverhead Drill Team proved that they can compete with anyone,” noted Naval Science Instructor Lt. Col. Peter McCarthy, “by finishing in the top three in four of six main events.“

Outstanding performances resulted in:

1st Place for Color Guard led by Rachel Blackmore (Area Four Champions)

2nd Place for Armed Platoon led by James McEntee

3rd Place  for Unarmed Platoon led by Donald Visek

3rd Place for Academic Team led by Nicholas Deschamps

In addition, approximately 350 cadets competed in the Individual Drill Competition where Nicholas Deschamps earned the 4th Place Medal.

These results earned the Riverhead Drill Team 3rd Place Overall  in the Area Four Drill Rankings for 2014.

Great job to all the cadets who finished the drill year so strong, and thank you to all the parents for their unwavering support during early morning practices as well as the competitions.
