Riverhead High School Presents Prescription Drug Forum

Over one third of students report prescription drugs are easy to find.

Over one third of Riverhead students in grades 8, 10 and 22 reported that prescription drugs are easy to find -- often, in their own family’s medicine cabinet.

With an eye toward tackling teen prescription drug abuse, the Riverhead Community Coalition for Safe and Drug Free Youth are hosting a community forum, “Rx for Disaster: Get Smart About Prescription Painkillers and Over the Counter Drugs” on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Auditorium.

Prescription drug abuse is the fastest growing drug problem in the United States, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In fact, teens abuse prescription drugs more often than they do any drug except marijuana - -and the results can be deadly.

Most painkiller abusers reported getting the prescription drugs free from friends and relatives.

Free child care for grades K through 5 will be provided at Thursday's forum by the Riverhead Youth Bureau.
