Riverhead Kids Say 'No' To Drugs

Close to 1000 people are expected to march in Riverhead on Friday.

Students from the Riverhead Central School District teamed up with the Riverhead Community Awareness Program (CAP) for ," for a drug-free Riverhead on Friday.

The event began at the Pulaski Street School and features a motivational speech by honorary guest Deacon Curtis Highsmith.

Over 200 fifth and sixth graders were slated to participate. The event is part of an ongoing effort on the part of the t and community groups to take a proactive stance against drinking and drugs.

In April, the Riverhead Community Coalition for a Safe and Drug-Free Youth hosted a about the dangers of prescription painkillers and over-the-counter drugs.

The Coalition will present another event, "The Power of Parents," hosted by Lissa Harris, program specialist, of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), on June 11 from 7 to 8 p.m at the Riverhead High School auditorium.

The event is meant to educate parents and give them the tools they need to have critically important conversations with their teens about the dangers of alcohol and drug use.
