Riverhead NJROTC Off To Strong Start

One young Riverhead NJROTC cadet had a particularly busy summer.

School may have just started but the Riverhead High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps of cadets is ready to go, with 140 members.

This year’s commanding officer is c/LCDR James McEntee.

“We’re very happy about the strong turnout,” Lt. Col. Peter McCarthy, the senior naval science instructor for the program said. “We have our cadets meet with both the seventh and eighth grade students during one of their physical education periods in the fall, and I think that really helps the middle school students get to know our cadets and what they are all about. We’ve also had a great run of successes, with several of our cadets being awarded college scholarships, an outstanding year in drill team competitions, and thanks to some great fundraising—some excellent field trip and leadership training experiences. We’re looking forward to a great year.”

Company Senior Chief, Cadet Nicholas Deschamps, presented promotion certificates to cadet leaders for the new school year during the Tuesday afternoon formation.

Cadet Deschamps, a senior who is ranked number five in his class had a "very productive summer," according to school officials.

Not only did he attend the 11th Annual 2013 Rotary Youth Leadership Awards summer program, but he was a counselor. He was also Riverhead High School’s representative to the 2013 American Legion Boys' State of New York, an citizenship and leadership training program.

Nicholas also attended the NJROTC Sail Academy off the coast of Florida and is now certified as a senior crew member.

“I really enjoyed all of these activities,” he said. “It was great being one of the counselors at the Rotary event. I met lots of other high school students from the area and had a great time. Boys’ State was pretty intense, but it was a good experience. The Sailing Academy was really fun. I had never sailed before, so I really learned a lot about sailing.”
