Riverhead School District Shows Parents How to Submit Questions for Common Core Meeting

What questions will you bring to the Common Core educational forum?

With the highly publicized Common Core education forum only days away, Riverhead school officials are getting the word out on how residents can submit questions.

The upcoming Common Core forum, hosted by New York State Education Commissioner Dr. John King, has been moved from an initially suggested Riverhead site to a new location.

The forum will now be held on Tuesday, Nov. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Eastport-South Manor High School, located at 543 Moriches-Middle Island Road, in Manorville.

The intent of the meeting is to give parents, students, and educators the opportunity to ask questions and express their opinions about the New York State Education Department’s roll out of the Common Core, teacher evaluations, testing and student privacy.

The auditorium seats 1000; seats will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

At the first Common Core meeting in the area, held at Ward Melville High School Tuesday night, around 1200 turned out and blasted the Common Core Curriculum.

The First Senatorial District is home to more than 30 individual school districts— the most of any senate district on Long Island, according to school officials.

"In order to ensure that each school district has a voice at this meeting, each district superintendent has been invited to submit questions from each of the following areas: Common Core Curriculum, assessments,  Annual Professional Performance Review, or APPR, and student privacy. The organizers of this event will choose one question from each district based on submittals," the Riverhead school district said in a release.

Parents, students, teachers, PTA members and residents can submit questions on those topics to Riverhead Superintendent Nancy Carney by email at nancy.carney@riverhead.net. Those sending in questions should also include their names and whether they are a parent, teacher, student, or administrator. The deadline for submitting questions is November 21.

Those whose questions are chosen will be notified in advance; a seat will be reserved at the event for those chosen.
