Riverhead school kids: Turn off your TVs

Monday, April 21, marked the beginning of “turn off your television” week at Riverhead’s Roanoke Avenue Elementary School. The initiative is inspired by research that ties a decrease in TV viewing to increased attention spans and greater academic success among students.

The school launched the week with a book swap for 3rd and 4th graders and a “Read Aloud” for children in grades K-2.

To keep things on track, the school is hosting two other events this week. On Tuesday, April 22, from 6-7 p.m., students and their families are invited to a milk and cookie night on the Roanoake Elementary Field. Families are encouraged to bring their favorite books and a blanket to sit on.

Then, on Thursday, April 24 from 6 to 7 p.m., the school will celebrate what it’s calling “Outdoor Family Fun Night.” The idea is to keep students away from those TVs by engaging them and their families in an assortment of board games and books. There will also be a craft session to make special Mother’s Day gifts.
