Riverhead Students Say 'No' To Drugs

The annual march was held indoors due to rainy skies.

Despite soggy skies Friday, the Riverhead Community Awareness Program sponsored its 28th Annual "Say No to Drugs March."

Due to the rain, the event was held indoors at the Pulaski Street School auditorium. In attendance were members of the Stony Brook University women’s lacrosse team, winners of the 2013 America East Championship, who were this year’s honored guests and keynote speakers.

The march was followed by a ceremony in which students, wearing purple T-shirts proclaiming themselves drug-free, took a pledge, led by Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walters, to remain drug free.

“I was thrilled to have these young women and their coaches come to Riverhead to share their winning strategies, both on and off the field, with our students and community,” said CAP’s executive director and Stony Brook alumna, Felicia Scocozza.

Pulaski Street School Principal Dave Densieski agreed. “I believe the most powerful message of the day to the students is that there are a lot of adults outside of our schools that really do care and support them as they face the many social challenges of today."

"Say no," New York State Senator LaValle told the students. "Say no, so you can achieve your dreams."

Winners of the essay contest held in conjunction with the event were fifth grader John Cihlar and sixth grader Kathleen Doherty. Both received a $100 gift certificate from Tanger Outlets.

After the ceremony, the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1742 served a picnic lunch to all of the students.
