Roman Banquet Entertains, Fills Bellies Again

Riverhead Middle School's Roman Banquet was held Thursday night, hosting nearly 300 for food and fun.

Riverhead Middle School's Latin program hosted its annual Roman Banquet Thursday night, to a packed room holding nearly 300 family members, teachers, and friends in the Middle School cafetorium.

The tradition harkens back to the days Roman feasts, with a play, courses and courses of food, and of course doggie bags to bring the food home in.

During the annual festival each year, students perform a play they wrote themselves. Following " this year students performed "Ancient Failures of Epic Proportions."

The Mappa Splendida contest recognizes the beautiful doggie bags Romans used before the days of actual doggie bags. Romans often used napkins - "mappas" in Latin - take home their leftovers.

The entire event was presided over by Magistra Lorene Custer, the RMS Latin teacher, who undertakes this Herculean effort every year.
