School District Projected to Lose $2.9 Million in Aid Cuts

Statewide, $1.5 billion cut in effort to close $10 billion projected shortfall.

The 'perfect storm' hit Tuesday night when Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced his 2011-2012 executive budget. In an effort to close a projected $10 billion budget gap without raising taxes or borrowing, the governor announced $1.5 billion in education aid being slashed statewide.

Riverhead Central School District is projected to see a $2.9 million reduction this upcoming year, compared to its 2010-2011 state aid.

The drop in aid represents a 16.1 percent reduction in aid to the school district, and a 2.7 percent cut in the school district's $108 million overall budget. Statewide, the cuts represent a 7.3 percent decrease to local schools compared to last year.

Carney said last month that she had already begun preparing for the governor's expected cuts, and will begin presenting next year's budget to the Board of Education this month in a series of presentations. The next school board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 8.
