Riverhead Students Win Long Island 'Challenge' Round

184 high schools are participating in the competition.

The Riverhead High School Long Island Challenge Team scored big at a recent competition.

The team traveled to New York City to the MSG Varsity studio on Tuesday, to compete in their first round of the "Long Island Challenge". The "Challenge" is sponsored by News 12 in partnership with Cablevision's education initiative, Power To Learn.

The Riverhead High School team, including members Daniel Raynor, captain, Shane Ford, Charlotte Palmer, Steven Keller, Alex Roytman and Edgar Samudio, who are coached by RHS science teacher Christopher McCrary, won their first round against the team from Brentwood High School.

The "Challenge" began as a Long Island-wide 13 years ago and has grown to include the entire tri-state area, including Long Island, with Nassau and Suffolk as two distinct regions, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Westchester/Lower Hudson Valley, New Jersey and Connecticut.

During the current season, 184 high schools are facing off with an eye toward becoming the Tri-State Challenge Champion and winning $10,000 for their school and $500 for each team member who competes in the final round.
