Target Sends Riverhead Music Students To Broadway

A grant allowed 27 students to experience the magic of the Great White Way.

Dreams of Broadway became reality for a group of Riverhead High School music students this week.

On Tuesday, a Target field trip grant afforded 27 Riverhead High School music students and four chaperones the chance to travel to New York and see the Broadway production of "The Phantom of the Opera."

"The Phantom of the Opera is now in its 25th year on Broadway, and, after seeing the magic on the stage, the students could understand why," RHS chorus teacher Dena Tishim said. "We arrived in the city with enough time to get a bite to eat and have a short visit to the New Yor Public Library."

Some students received library cards that will enable them to access the New York Library's online database, she added.

Students were able to experience “Kids Night On Broadway" evening; an actor playing the Phantom role spoke to the audience after the performance, urging students to "follow their own dreams."
