Blue Waves Honored At Town Hall

A crowded town board room exploded in applause as members of Riverhead High School's girls' basketball team, the Blue Waves, were honored on Tuesday.

They're not just one of the top girls' varsity basketball teams in New York State, but they're got the brains to back up their beauty on the court.

So said Riverhead Central School District Superintendent Nancy Carney at Tuesday's town board meeting when she joined elected officials and Coach David Spinelli to to honor Riverhead's young stars, who recently made local history when the dream team in a statewide competition. 

Smiling profusely, the girls accepted awards and accolades from the town board and Carney.

"I'm so proud that you are also a Scholar/Athete team," Carney said. The award is granted by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association to teammates who also excel in the classroom.

Spinelli said community spirit and support had been invaluable; as blue fever swept through Riverhead, some young athletes painted themselves blue in solidarity with the Blue Waves, who won the League III championship before heading upstate the Final Four.

The Blue Waves' dream came to an end in Troy at the hands of an undefeated Penfield Patriots squad with a 67-49 loss.

But Walter pointed out the team achieved unprecedented glory.

"We wish you the best of luck for next season," said Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter.
