Comsewogue Spoils Homecoming for the Blue Waves

Riverhead struggles on both sides of the ball, falling to the Warriors 20-0.

The Comsewogue Warriors spoiled Riverhead's homecoming on Saturday afternoon, overpowering the Blue Wave on both sides of the ball and winning 20-0.

Defensively, the Warriors held the Blue Wave to just 162-yards of total offense, and offensively the Warriors hit Riverhead repeatedly with the force of Vincenzo Masone.

Masone, a 6'1", 230 lb. senior running back, outsized the Blue Wave's defensive line and plowed through them, for short gains throughout the game. Comsewoque ran Masone 31 times, for a total of 94-yards.

The Riverhead coaches tried to prep the team for Masone, knowing his size would be difficult to contain. "We talked about low tackles," Riverhead head coach Leif Shay said.  "But we just couldn't get it done."

"We thought their line was pretty good even if they are undersized," Comsewogue head coach Chuck Carron said.  "Our plan usually is to run Masone, but we were concerned this week since he was out the last two weeks. We were going to limit his carries, but he seemed fine," Carron continued.

Masone said he likes being the workhorse for his team. "I just think to myself that I can't be stopped," he said. "That always gets me a couple more yards."

The touchdowns for the Warriors did not come from Masone. Quarterback Matt Scalera scored on the opening drive of the first half for the Warriors with a 6-yard run and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to open the second half.

Riverhead, on the other hand, had a hard time moving the ball at all. The Blue Wave punted 4 times in the game and turned the ball over on downs 4 times.

Junior running back Charles Bartlet tried to move the ball for the Blue Wave. Bartley carried the ball 16 times, for 70 yards. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Bitzer threw for 65 yards in the game before senior Dave McKillop came in to take his last snaps under center at Coach Mike McKillop Memorial Field.

Shay said it was a disappointment for the team's seniors to close out their home games with a loss at home. "That group of guys has been bleeding blue and white for the last four years," he said. But with games left to play the coach said the Blue Waves will keep "plugging away."

For Comsewogue (4-2), the win practically solidifies a playoff birth, the team's goal, according to Carron. "This is a huge win for us," the coach said.

Next week the Blue Wave (1-5) will try to regroup as they travel to North Babylon.
