Kids Shoot Hoops to 'Stop the Violence'

Playing together on the court helps resolve conflicts, organizers believe.

With an eye toward stemming the tide of what some feel is escalating violence in today's young people, two men turned to a tried-and-true solution — sports.

The second day of Riverhead's "Stop the Violence' Basketball Tournament took place on Horton Avenue at the town's court on Sunday.

The event, which began seven years ago and was organized by Dwayne Eleazer and Larry Wiliams, was created to give young people a healthy outlet to resolve differences, Eleazer said.

"When they get together on the court like this, maybe they'll see each on the street and, when there's a disagreement, talk it out, or work it out here," Eleazer said.
