Riverhead's Miguel Maysonet Getting Attention from NFL Scouts

Maysonet, who won the Hanson Award while at Riverhead High School, is being considered for a top collegiate award – and something even bigger.

Stony Brook University running back Miguel Maysonet is in the running for the Walter Payton Award, given to the top player in the NCAA's Football Championship Subdivision. But according to a Newsday report, he's getting other kinds of attention, too.

Newsday reports that the senior running back has been an getting looks from NFL scouts who are impressed with what his coach Chuck Priore described as "his whole package."

According to the report, an anonymous NFL scout said about Maysonet: "He's instinctive, very smart, has amazing balance and he hasn't been hurt. ... His agility, his athleticism and his ability to change directions on a dime are special. At FCS schools, there's always a question of the level of competition. For Maysonet, it doesn't apply. The games he played against FBS schools were his best games."

Heading into last Saturday's final regular-season game against VMI, Maysonet was averaging 166.9 yards a game with 16 touchdowns on the season.

"They love who he is," Priore told Newsday. "They love what everybody says about him. He's low-maintenance, good grades, and he plays the game. He's an NFL-type back. He doesn't run east-west."
