Center for Creative Retirement-Week of November 11

The Center for Creative Retirement (CCR) began its 33rd year on Monday September 9. Retirees seeking an intellectual challenge and social engagement will find in the program just what they are seeking.

CCR meets Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays in the LIU Building on the campus of Suffolk Community College in Riverhead.

Each day brings a fresh perspective on some topic that members have chosen as part of the syllabus. CCR volunteers research and present the topics. As a member, you can look forward to a rich tapestry of new facts and perspectives.

Join us on Monday November 11 for our continuing series on the history and culture of Ireland. From 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., we discuss the Irish author James Joyce and his classic novella, “The Dead.” After lunch, at noon, we hear about advertising that targets children. A one-hour review will educate parents and grandparents about the positives and negatives in the messages aimed at their youngsters.

Tuesday November 12 offers us a morning session on women in sports. How does the progress of women in sports reflect their place and value in society now, back through the twentieth century, and before? At noon, we relive the 1960s British invasion of rock music. Listen to, and see film clips of, the Beatles and other stars who “invaded” our shores.

Thursday morning brings a discussion of our syllabus for next term, and we also hear from some of our new members who tell us about their backgrounds. We follow up at noon with CCR’s semi-annual “covered-dish luncheon” where everyone brings in a dish of food that becomes part of a great buffet we all share. It’s a day of good food and great sociability.

CCR classes are held in the LIU Building on the campus of Suffolk Community College, 121 Speonk-Riverhead Road, Riverhead, NY. Our web site: http://www.liu.edu/Riverhead/CE/CCR/About.
