Center for Creative Retirement-Week of November 4

The Center for Creative Retirement (CCR) began its 33rd year on Monday September 9. Retirees seeking an intellectual challenge and social engagement will find in the program just what they are seeking.

CCR meets Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays in the LIU Building on the campus of Suffolk Community College in Riverhead.

Each day brings a fresh perspective on some topic that members have chosen as part of the syllabus. CCR volunteers research and present the topics. As a member, you can look forward to a rich tapestry of new facts and perspectives.

Monday November 4 is a CCR day of laughs. At 10 a.m. we revisit the old 1950s “Show of Shows” starring Sid Caesar and see some of his later skits, as well. The morning continues with scenes from hilarious and irreverent Friars Club roasts, until we break for lunch at 11:30.

Noon brings us a retrospective of the inimitable Phyllis Diller and her irreverent side-splitting commentary on life as a wife and mother. By 1 p.m., you should be feeling great. After all, laughter is the best medicine!

Tuesday morning November 5 is a morning of nostalgia. From 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., we relive the golden era of New York City baseball—the old Dodgers, Giants and Yankees of 1947 to 1957. Some will shed a tear when we memorialize the move of the city’s beloved Dodgers and Giants to the West Coast.

Recover at noon with a one-hour presentation on comedy genius, Mel Brooks, film director, screenwriter, composer, lyricist, comedian, actorand producer. See scenes from his storied career and reminisce about the TV, film, and Broadway shows we have seen him in.

Thursday morning at 10 a.m. brings us to the popular book of history of how World War I began, “The Guns of August,” by Barbara Tuchman. We will discuss her views of the tragedy of the War and learn about how “the war to end all wars” was a disaster waiting to happen.

We return at noon for a one-hour seminar on how to organize our paperwork and activities to save valuable time. Our guest speaker, a “professional organizer,” will share her expertise with the members.

CCR classes are held in the LIU Building on the campus of Suffolk Community College, 121 Speonk-Riverhead Road, Riverhead, NY. Our web site: http://www.liu.edu/Riverhead/CE/CCR/About.
