Center for Creative Retirement-Week of October 28

The Center for Creative Retirement (CCR) began its 33rd year on Monday September 9. Retirees seeking an intellectual challenge and social engagement will find in the program just what they are seeking.

CCR meets Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays in the LIU Building on the campus of Suffolk Community College in Riverhead.

Each day brings a fresh perspective on some topic that members have chosen as part of the syllabus. CCR volunteers research and present the topics. As a member, you can look forward to a rich tapestry of new facts and perspectives.

CCR returns from a one-week recess on Monday October 28 for part 1 of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical, “South Pacific.” From 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., CCR members read the parts of unforgettable characters like Nellie Forbush and Bloody Mary, and the audience sings along with the musical numbers. Lyrics are provided on a large screen; no bouncing ball to follow, however.

Return from South Pacific at noon for a fact-filled one-hour exposé on the marketing of pharmaceuticals, a continuation of our series, “Advertising and Consumerism in the U.S.A.” Our presenters, a retired salesperson and a retired M.D., will provide eye-opening insights.

On Tuesday morning we hear about women’s rights as seen through commercials. Starting at 10 a.m., a clinical psychologist reflects on how these marketing devices reflect the status of women in the times that the commercials are produced. You will learn that the psychological underpinnings of the commercials are well-thought-out by their producers.

Tuesday afternoon takes us on a noon to 1 p.m. tour of 1950s classic hard-driving rock and roll. We look at the music and some of the unique personalities who left an indelible impression on popular music. Some of those greats are still performing. Amazing!

CCR’s week concludes on Thursday with Director Billy Wilder’s 1960 film, “The Apartment.” Starring Jack Lemmon, Shirley McLaine, and Fred MacMurray, the film is a classic. After the film, over a brown-bag lunch, we will hear about what went on during production, and discuss what our impressions of the film are. Starting at 10 a.m., we adjourn at 1:00.

CCR classes are held in the LIU Building on the campus of Suffolk Community College, 121 Speonk-Riverhead Road, Riverhead, NY. Our web site: http://www.liu.edu/Riverhead/CE/CCR/About.
