10 Places to Volunteer Your Time

Do you have enough holiday cheer to share with other people? Give one of these organizations a call to give them some time.

Although we may all have the best intentions of being selfless and volunteering our time throughout the year, often times our schedules become full and obligations run our lives. If there is any time of the year to make the time to volunteer, it is now. So spread some holiday cheer and allow someone else to enjoy the holiday as much as you.

By volunteering you would be helping those who needs help with literacy skills. Literacy Suffolk trains all volunteers. Qualifications include a high school diploma and a training workshop. Approximately two to three hours a week should be dedicated for at least one year.

This organization is committed to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of seals, sea turtles, whales, dolphins and porpoises. Volunteers are needed to teach the public about what the foundation does and what to do if they see a marine mammal or sea turtle in New York water. You can help beach patrols look for cold-stunned turtles or become part of a rescue team for marine life. 631-369-9840.

3. American Red Cross (Suffolk County Branch)

There are many volunteer opportunities available here! You can work as a disaster volunteer who helps with local disasters and assists families with food, clothing and shelter. You can be on the disaster action team, work in a shelter or with clients. There are many possibilities for you to help.

4. Suffolk County Against Domestic Violence

With many options to choose from, everyone can find something they enjoy doing as a volunteer opportunity. Hotline counselors, advocacy assistants, office assistants and student internships are just a few of the positions available. 631-666-7181.

5. Riverhead Soccer Club

This club depends heavily on volunteers. Right now they are looking for a coach/recruitment manager, a field maintenance coordinator, a photographer, public relations and marketing help and most importantly, they need volunteers for a fundraising committee. 888-907-9998.

This organization works hard at gardening and designing while preserving civic beauty. They are looking for volunteers to help with garden therapy at an assisted living facility. They meet the first Tuesday of each month. 631-821-9650.

This historic farms has only one full time employee, therefore relies heavily on volunteers. Duties include special event organizing, class room visits, clean-up and maintenance of the farm, tour exhibits, fund raising and more. 631-298-5292.

8. Riverhead Lions Club

This club is part of Lions Club International, which is the world's largest service club organization. Volunteers help the community through many different events and programs. Recent events include caroling at local nursing homes and bell ringing for the Salvation Army. They meet the first Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at Digger's Pub. 9. Kent Animal Shelter

If you are an animal lover, then this is the perfect volunteer opportunity for you! They are looking for people to take animals for walks, socialize animals, attend adoption events and to do work around the office. 631-727-5731.

This organization helps the developmentally disabled through many different programs. They are in need of volunteers to help with activities such as bowling and picnics.
