Community Center Gets Fresh Color Following Donation

One resident gave nearly $12,000 to the town for a new paint job at the George Young Community Center. What do you think of the change?

One generous resident donated nearly $12,000 to the town to give the George Young Community Center in Jamesport a fresh paint job, which went on a couple weeks back and has starkly changed the building from its former blue-gray color to a classic red schoolhouse – the building's former use in a past life.

Councilman George Gabrielsen, who knows the donor from his farm stand down the road, said Helen Duryea has given funds in the past toward upkeep of the building, located on the corner of Main Road and S. Jamesport Avenue. Funds in the past have gone toward the gazebo, he said.

While Duryea offered $11,800, the town paid part of the share of the total bill, kicking in $3,500.

Duryea picked out the color herself, which Gabrielsen – who called the former color a little drab – said he was more than happy with.

"I said, 'You pick it out.' And I think it looks really good," he said. "She's happy. I'm happy. The town should be happy too, I think."

The building is open to the public for rental and occasionally hosts classes such as pilates, dance classes and more.

What do you think of the new color of the George Young Community Center?
